Zdjęcia z Sony α900 mają większe rozmiary niż dają niektóre przystawki cyfrowe średniego formatu! 4032 x 6048 pikseli, przy rozdzielczości druku 300 dpi, odpowiada wymiarom zdjęć 34,14 x 51,21 cm. Obraz jest więc większy od formatu A3 (29,7 x 42,0 cm), czyli „rozkładówki” w czasopiśmie o formacie strony A4. Tak wysoka rozdzielczość generowanych plików – przy bardzo dobrej optyce – zapewnia wyjątkową jakość odwzorowania szczegółów i ostrość obrazu. Spójrzmy tylko na tytułowe zdjęcie...

Wymiary sensora Sony α900 wynoszą 24 x 35,9 mm, a pojedynczego piksela – 5,9 mikrona. W obydwu przypadkach to więcej niż w mającym dwa razy niższą rozdzielczość, a znanym ze znakomitej dynamiki, „młodszym” modelu α700 (matryca APS-C, wymiary piksela 5,5 mikrona). Nic więc dziwnego, że Sony α900 rejestruje jeszcze większą skalę tonów. Daje czytelne szczegóły w światłach i cieniach przy różnicy ekspozycji rzędu 9 EV (!), a więc większej niż w przypadku innych lustrzanek cyfrowych. Większa liczba szczegółów w obrazie pozwala efektywnie interpolować go do większych rozmiarów, dlatego też Sony α900 – przy wysokiej ostrości generowanych plików – może konkurować pod względem formatu otrzymywanych wydruków nawet z przystawkami średnioformatowymi!
Wykorzystaniu niezwykłych możliwości matrycy – w zakresie wydobywania szczegółów z cieni – służy funkcja optymalizacji zakresu dynamicznego D-Range Optimizer (DRO). Może ona działać automatycznie, lub z ręcznie dobieranym poziomem wydobycia szczegółów, a największą dynamiką cechuje się standardowy profil parametrów obróbki obrazu.
