Nowy model 5D wyposażono w matrycę Canon CMOS, o rozdzielczości 21,1 miliona pikseli i rozmiarze pełnej klatki. Nowy jest też procesor obrazowy – DIGIC 4 wraz z ulepszoną matrycą CMOS zapewnia jakość porównywalną ze średnim formatem, dla serii nawet 310 zdjęć wykonywanych z prędkością 3,9 klatek/sek.No i tu kolejna nowość – lustrzanka Canona tez potrafi filmować – w aparacie dostępna jest funkcja filmowania w standardzie HD. W trybie Live View pozwala nagrywać filmy w rozdzielczości 1080 linii w pionie z prędkością 30 klatek/sek. Po rozpoczęciu filmowania w trybie Live View fotografowie mogą robić pojedyncze zdjęcia lub ich serie. Film jest nadal nagrywany po zrobieniu ostatniego zdjęcia.
Wśród innych usprawnień znajdziemy choćby 3 calowy ekran LCD Clear View z katem patrzenia 170° i powłokami odblaskowymi, poprawiony system menu obejmujący ekran Quick Control zapewniający bezpośredni dostęp do często używanych nastaw czy zintegrowany system czyszczący z nowymi powłokami fluorytowymi i filtrem niskoprzepustowym. Zakres czułości nowego modelu mieści się w zakresie ISO 100 -6400, ale jest możliwość jego rozszerzenia od ISO 50 do 25600.
9-punktowy system autofokusa uzupełnia 6 dodatkowych, niewidocznych punktów wspomagających ostrzenie znajdujących się wewnątrz okręgu pomiaru punktowego. Optymalizuje to śledzenie obiektu w trybie AI SERVO AF. Okrąg pomiaru punktowego obejmuje tylko 3,5% powierzchni kadru zapewniając dokładny odczyt ekspozycji w trudnych warunkach oświetleniowych. Aparat jest lekki, korpus wykonany jest ze stopu magnezowego z uszczelnieniem chroniącym przed czynnikami zewnętrznymi.
