Pod koniec sezonu zimowego, w Kalifornii, znany fotograf oraz współwłaściciel Armada Skis Inc. Chris O`Connel, wykonał pierwszą w historii fotografii sportów akcji nocną sekwencję zdjęć w technologii HDR.
Chris O'Connel to jeden z czołowych fotografów freeskiingu oraz współwłaściciel Armada Skis Inc. Jego styl fotografii cechuje perfekcyjne skomponowanie obrazu, idealny moment uchwycenia zawodnika i co najważniejsze – niezwykle wykorzystane światło. Trzymając się konsekwentnie tych trzech elementów tworzy proste, czytelne, ale bardzo efektowne obrazy.
Stawiając przed sobą wciąż nowe, coraz trudniejsze wyzwania fotograficzne, postanowił spróbować czegoś, czego nie robił jeszcze nikt. Jego celem było zrobienie sekwencyjnego zdjęcia z przejazdu narciarza po konstrukcji wyciągu narciarskiego. Wydawałoby się, że cała trudność stoi przed zawodnikiem, w końcu fotografia sekwencyjna to nic nowego, a przejazd po takiej konstrukcji jednak do najłatwiejszych nie należy. Chris chciał jednak uwiecznić ten przejazd nocą! By osiągnąć zamierzony efekt podświetlił zawodnika całym zestawem lamp błyskowych. Biorąc pod uwagę ograniczenia technologiczne projekt wydawał się niemożliwy do zrealizowania. Lampy błyskowe dają bardzo mocne światło, idealne do zdjęć nocnych, jednak po każdym błysku potrzebują czasu by się naładować - co teoretycznie uniemożliwia stworzenie sekwencji. Chyba, że... dysponuje się najnowocześniejszym sprzętem, wieloletnim doświadczeniem w fotografowaniu ekstremalnych sportów zimowych oraz wielką pasją, która motywuje do przekraczania kolejnych granic.
Zaprojektowanie systemu oświetlenia błyskowego, który podołałby projektowi, wymagało nie tylko wiedzy i czasu, ale i wielu prób. Dodatkowym wyzwaniem było stworzenie obrazu w technologii HDR, czyli zdjęcia o dużej rozpiętości tonalnej. Oznaczało to konieczność umocowania aparatu na statywie, by wszystkie ekspozycje wykonane były z jednego miejsca. Trzeba pamiętać, że Chris nie robił fotografii krajobrazu, lecz dynamiczne zdjęcie szybkiej akcji!
Na miejsce prób wybrano zamknięte już po sezonie ośrodki Mountain High oraz June Mountain w Kalifornii, gdzie O`Connel wybrał się wraz ze znakomitym zawodnikiem z teamu Armady – Seanem Loganem i znanym z wspaniałego stylu Ianem Cosco. Po wielu dniach pracy udało się! O`Connel stworzył zaplanowane obrazy ustawiając migawkę na 1/500s, częstotliwość 8 klatek na sekundę oraz najwyższą jakość obrazu, czyli format RAW.
